Circassia / Circassian

Umbrella exonym for the indigenous mountain peoples of the Northwest Caucasus, united by related languages, the heroic Nart Saga, and the ethical code Adyghe Xabze. Their traditions blend ancient pagan cosmology with later Christianity and Islam. In the 19th century, Circassians suffered genocide and mass exile, forming a global diaspora.
