Kayin’s mission is to be a living record for key historical events for the Ouranians. He is charged with witnessing and retaining key historical events, which he helps to arrange in a proper chronology. As for being a Chronologer, it is a passive activity, requiring Kayin to be mostly observer, not doer. As a spectator, Kayin often considers himself not really part of the human race. We only rarely see him in an active role where he interferes in events rather than simply recording them. Kayin’s unique ability to retain the memory of all his experiences, including those spanning lifetimes, makes him the ideal chronologer—the one who arranges events in their proper ordering or development. In this sense, he is not just a record keeper but the living archive of the Ouranians—a “souled backup,” so to speak. It is important for the Ouranians that a duplicate storage of events is kept where all chronologizing occurs, namely within the repository of information—as the Ouranians call it—that for us is our world. While the Ouranians arguably have their own methods of preserving or tracking the course of our world’s development from “outside,” they do need to keep a current record also within our constantly changing environment, particularly for those instances when history gets “rewritten,” meaning when “Days Undone Upheavals” come to pass.
