Chagatai Khanate

A “khanate” is the historic polity or state ruled by a khan. Khanates were typically nomadic Turkic, Mongol, and Tatar societies equivalent to kinship-based chiefdoms and feudal monarchies. The Chagatai Khanate existed from 1226–1347 AD and was established by Genghis Khan’s second son, Chagatai. At the height of Chagatai’s power, he controlled the area from the Amu Darya (river) south of the Aral Sea all the way to the Altai Mountains. By 1347 it had split into Moghulistan and the West Chagatai Khanate.
