The people of Assyria, an ancient Mesopotemian civilization in today’s northern Iraq, which succeeded the Sumerians. Assyria’s rise began in the late 3rd millennium BC and reached its peak in the 8th and late 7th centuries BC, when it dominated the region from the Persian Gulf to Egypt.
