A member of the legendary race of female warriors in Greek mythology, portrayed in ancient epic poems and legends, including in the Labors of Heracles, the Argonautica, and Homer's Iliad. The term was appropriated by Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana in 1541, when he renamed the South American river Rio Santa Maria “Amazon.” In the OC, Kayin mentions Otrera, the fabled First Queen of the Amazons.
